Did you know that July is disability pride month? I didn't until a couple of days ago—even though I'm disabled. Anyway, I put together a short list of resources to help you learn more about disability and ableism:
A couple of fast facts (for you to research)
- Many disabled people do not have marriage equality
- More than a third of Americans police kill are disabled
- "Disability" and "disabled" are not bad words
Videos
- Crip Camp on Netflix
- Stella Young's TED talk, "I'm not your inspiration"
Books
Nonfiction:
- The Pretty One, by Keah Brown
- Disability Visibility, edited by Alice Wong
- Invisible, by Michele Lent Hirsch
And some fiction with chronically ill characters who don't die:
- Sick Kids in Love, by Hannah Moskowitz
- Get a Life, Chloe Brown, by Talia Hibbert
Articles
- Bitch: The Sick Issue
- Black Disabled Lives Matter, article in Teen Vogue by Sarah Kim
This list is by no means comprehensive. In fact, it's pretty basic. But I trust you to use internet search tools to expand your learning. (Do not ask your disabled friends.)
